Helga Erika Wenzek left this world on February 2, 2021, after a long battle with Dementia and Covid related illness. She was 76 years old.
Helga came to Canada at the young age of 16. She packed her suitcase in Dortmund, Germany and sailed across the Atlantic alone to pursue a life for herself. Helga arrived in Toronto where her older brother Horst already resided and she began her new life. Helga met Horst at a dance and the rest was history for them married for 52 years. The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Helga. She loved their cottage on Turtle lake, canoeing, and listening to the Loons. Helga always had the most beautiful gardens and spent many hours pulling weeds and planting her flowers. She also made the best plum streusel cakes.
It would be wrong to say that Helga lost her battle because she never stopped fighting. No matter how sick she was, she was always determined. When anyone else would have broken, Helga stayed strong. Through her, we know what resilience and perseverance truly look like. There was no quit in Mom.
Helga is survived by her husband Horst, daughters Kimmy and Jenny, grandsons Charlie and Koby and granddaughter Riley.
