Magnus (Mike) Schmidt passed in peace at home on Monday, May 20th at the age of 85. Mike was born in Aabenraa, Denmark in 1934. In his late teens/early twenties, he did his apprenticeship as a Pastry Chef in Copenhagen. At the ripe old age of 23, he came to Canada at the invitation of his aunt and uncle who had previously immigrated to Toronto and who were also in the bakery business. At the time when he arrived here, Mike had no intention of staying in Canada permanently. That was, of course, before he met Dolores... who would soon become his wife. Mike and Dolores moved to Boston shortly after they were married in 1965 to pursue work opportunities. Not long after, their two children were born in Springfield, Massachusetts - daughter, Tove Marie and a year afterwards son, Aubrey John. Several years later, an opportunity arose back in Canada which allowed Mike to fulfill his lifelong dream of owning his own bakery. Thus, in the early 70's, Mike along with his young family moved back to Canada and they ran their own bakery (called Kern's Pastry) in Mississauga for five years and a bit. Then in the very early 80's, Mike moved his family to Erin, Ontario where he and Dolores lived for 37 years. Mike loved this little town. He came to know and love many of its people. In his later years following retirement, Mike could be seen walking "uptown" daily to get the mail at the post office... stopping along the way to have a chat with whoever he met along the way. Mike loved life. He really, really did. Anyone who knew him would likely testify to his incessant happy-go-lucky nature. He always had a smile.
Mike will be greatly missed by Dolores, Tove, Aubrey and his one and only grandson, Dwight, whom he dearly loved.
Visitation will be held at St. John Brebeuf Church in Erin (24 Millwood Rd.) on Saturday, May 25th from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass to be held at the same location at 11:00 a.m. A reception will be held immediately following the Mass in the church hall.
